Sometimes you need age in total days — for example, calculating how many days old a newborn is, or the exact duration of a contract. Total days also lets you compute age in weeks or hours.
Leap years make manual day-counting error-prone. A person born on 29 February has a birthday that only exists every four years, which confuses naive calculations.
