What is a PIN Code?
PIN (Postal Index Number) is a 6-digit code that identifies a specific delivery area for mail and courier services in India. It was introduced by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar on 15 August 1972 to simplify and speed up the sorting and delivery of letters, parcels and official documents across the country.
The PIN system helps eliminate confusion over similar place names, different languages, and incorrect addresses. Today it is used not just by India Post but by every courier, e-commerce platform, bank and government service in the country.
Why Do You Need a PIN Code?
- Addressing mail and parcels — every letter and courier needs the correct PIN code for fast delivery
- Online shopping — e-commerce deliveries are routed by PIN code
- Banking — KYC forms, cheque books and account opening require your PIN code
- Government services — Aadhaar, passport, voter ID and ration card applications ask for your PIN code

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a PIN code?▾
PIN stands for Postal Index Number — a 6-digit code used by India Post to identify delivery areas for mail and couriers. It was introduced on 15 August 1972 to speed up sorting and delivery of letters and parcels across India.
How do I find my PIN code?▾
Use the search tool above — enter your 6-digit PIN code to see the post offices it covers, or select your state and type your area or post office name to find its PIN code. You can also check your letters, courier receipts, or ask at your nearest post office.
How is a PIN code structured?▾
The first digit indicates one of 9 postal zones (8 regional + 1 for the Army Postal Service). The first 2 digits together identify the sub-region or postal circle, the first 3 digits identify the sorting district, and the last 3 digits identify the individual delivery post office.
Is PIN code the same as ZIP code?▾
Yes — both are postal codes. India uses the 6-digit PIN code system, while the US uses 5-digit ZIP codes. Other countries have their own systems (UK postcodes, Canadian postal codes, etc.).
How many PIN codes are there in India?▾
India has about 19,000 unique PIN codes covering more than 1,54,000 post offices across 35 states and union territories.
What do the last 3 digits of a PIN code mean?▾
The last 3 digits identify the delivery post office within the sorting district. The first office in a district is numbered 01 (the Head Office or General Post Office), and newer offices get higher numbers.
Can two areas share the same PIN code?▾
Yes. A single PIN code often covers a post office and all the localities it serves — for example, one PIN code can cover several neighbourhoods, villages, or a whole colony. That is why searching by PIN code can return multiple post offices.
What is the PIN code of India?▾
India does not have a single PIN code. Every state, district, city and post office has its own 6-digit PIN code — use the search tool above to find the one you need.
